The Sins of our Fathers (Review)

The Sins of our Fathers (Review)

ell, like fine wine, I’ve been saving the Memory’s Legion collection by James S.A. Corey to enjoy, sip by sip. And I just finished the last glass with The Sin of our Fathers.

This collection was a great set of stories that acted as prequels and sequels to the popular Expanse series. In each, a character from the massive set is exampled in an often-new light, showing where he or she came from and where they ended. And in this final story, we find out what happened to Filip Nagata, the tug-of-war son between Naomi and Marco (who was the maniac running the Free Navy). You might remember Filip slipping out the dock and joining another ship, leaving his father to his final fatal action. Well, a quarter century has passed, Filip is old and now on a colony world where the shit is hitting the fan, chop-chop-chop.

See, there are monsters the migrate through the colony every couple of nights. The primary colony base is now off the air. More monsters are coming. The gates have closed for good – no help there. So this last outpost votes – stay and defend, or try to move their colony to high ground. The vote goes for move, but the thuggish lead in charge of maintenance steps around the “will of the people” and decides they will stay.

And now is the time that Filip can possibly make up for the billions of deaths he had a direct hand in.

Just a fascinating story that leaves us in doubt about the long-term survival of the colony and our protagonist. It was quiet and subtle and bittersweet, a perfect ending to this sprawling tale.

Glad these snippits were made available to non-Kindle readers. Enjoyed every one of them.

See you, space cowboy.
